Ismail Kadare ç 9 Read & DownloadBroken April is haunting story with n out of time charm There re not many novels round with such simple nd yet powerfully evocative style More than the plot in itself what counts here is the tmosphere Kadare is ble to recreateI ctually perceived the mist nd the cold s well s the brightless nights nd the wind swept landscapes where the novel takes place with Final Seconds an uncommon intensityAs reader who gets easily distracted Broken April meant The Czech Legion 1914–20 an unusual business to me this book never lost its grip over me from the very first to the last pageI don t know that muchbout Albania part from being ware that Italian fought The Divine Circle of Ladies Courting Trouble a uselessnd A Bridge Through Time aggressive war there We will break the kidneys of Albania barked Mussolini back in 1939nd that the country hosted one of the most senseless dictators even for the crazy communist standards in the world Enver HoxhaFor striking majority of Italians contemporary Albania is God forsaken country place good for ruffians pimps prostitutes nd hosting bogus universities where our dull politicians get their fake degrees Besides the massive waves of desperate immigration coming from the coasts of Albania which reached Italy in the 1990s didn t help in the way our neighbours A Change of Heart are perceived It s true how therere Albanians involved in criminal F/Studio activities in Italy but thengain it s West End Girls 2 always the bad guys who getll the news Just like it happens with Romanians who share similar bad reputation in Italy nd had A Decadent Way to Die (Savannah Reid Mystery, a megalomaniac dictator too therere thousands of good honest hardworking Free Fall (Sisterhood, and considerate Albanian immigrants between the Alpsnd Sicily But this is pretty obvious isn t itBroken April deals t the same time with backwardness nd cultural heritage of Albania introducing the eually wonderful nd terrifying Kanun n Needled to Death (A Helping Hands Mystery ancient code to settlerguments nd controversies in the remote Albanian plateaus A code where vengeance through family feuds under brutal but strict rules is focal point nd that reminded me uite lot the way disputes were handled in some parts of southern Italy One Last Time and Sardinia The Albanian Kanun however seem to be structurednd taken seriously by the local inhabitants than its Italian less official counterpartsThis novel speaks bout the Kanun nd the people living Huckleberry Harvest and uite often dyingccording to its principles but it s lso n excellent cross section of the Albanian mountaineers Grandmothers Against the War: How We Got Off Our Fannies and Stood Up for Peace a peopleble to welcome the Church nd the Islam without losing most of its peculiar habits nd with fascination for towers There is distinct beauty in the uniueness of Broken April nd this uality than compensates the slight disappointment of plot Out of His League andn ending which could have been First Degree Mudder a bit better Not that it really matterss what makes this novel very good is not its storytelling but where the story itself happens This is the first book by Ismail Kadare I ve ever read London's Best Kept Secret and most likely the first of long series Here we have n uthor who definitely has something to say nd somewhere to speak bout I d like to listen of it So like pretty much everyone else I read this book s part of my reading round the world challenge for Albania This wasn t my intended Albania book I had hoped to find book bout Albanian religious history since I know Albania has long nd fascinating history involving religious freedom nd tolerance However it seems this is the uthor ll Albanians recommend so I succumbed to it So Broken April has three main characters First we meet Gjorg Gjorg has just murdered man s part of his family s blood feud He now has month to live while knowing Romeo for Real after this month is over he will be murdered by relative of his victim Next we meet Bessian nd Diana They re married couple traveling round the Albanian mountains Bessian sees much beauty in the blood feud traditions while Diana is horrified For lack of better word this book is strange It s very literary
*which i usually *I usually t like It s one of those books where there s isn t much of plot Bad Billy Brighton and where we never get to see than skin deep view of the characters I m still confused s to whether Bessian nd Diana re Albanians or not so it might be problem with my own reading or it just never gets entirely explained It s lso not clear when this book is set Something bout the entire thing feels like fantasy land than n ctual depiction of A Knife in the Heart a countryside To be entirely honest I didn t like this book but I don t haveny good reason why I suppose it felt like it didn t uite progress nywhere It s hard to feel for ny character Bessian nd Diana seem like strangers there s no chemistry between them nd I couldn t believe that they re married Gjorg was promising but it was hard to care bout him because we never really see him s person I don t feel like I know who he is other than nother participant in A Bollywood Affair a blood feud He doesn t even seem to be sadbout his brother s death And this is such missed opportunity because brief look t Kanun s Wikipedia page left me very intrigued Blood feuds were still thing in Albania in 2014 The Scent of Rosa's Oil although their communist leader tried to putn end to it in his time This is wild It is lso huge political uestion If Nobodys Angel (Willow Park, an entire societygrees to specific set of laws can government ctually force them to stop At this point it seems to be such cultural heritage nd obviously way too many people have died for nothing but is it the government s job to make this stop This book doesn t provide ny kind of Defending Hearts analysis other than Bessian being somewhat of psychopath All in ll this just wasn t the book for me Kadare was trying to create specific mood here but I just wasn t feeling it Maybe studying this book in literature class would work better but I can t say I m finishing this book with strong urge to read of his work What I m Taking With Me Bessian is bsolutely the type of guy who makes excuses for rapists like men re just built to rape this is human nature I visited Albania for exactly one fternoon nd my only real memory is that I spent the day before reading Feel the Heat (Phoenix Agency, a ton of factsbout Albania so every other thing I said was did you know that Albania I m delight to travel with in case Sudden Fury (The Last Gunfighter, anyone was wondering So did you know that Albania has bunkers spreadround the entire country due to Spiky a leader who was paranoid Work Adventuresfter 3 months of not working I was n wkward mess for the
